A is for Animals

19th June 2010 - 5th September 2010 (free entry area of museum)

'A is for Animals' is a family and children oriented Australian War Memorial touring exhibition. It will be one of, if not the largest, touring exhibitions ever seen in Western Queensland

Animals are put to many uses in war. Horses, camels, mules and donkeys have provided transport for soldiers and armies. Carrier pigeons delivered messages and tracker dogs still locate the enemy or explosive in Afghanistan. Other animals were mascots for Australian troops. Some animals just made life uncomfortable for our troops - like the rats and lice in the trenches of the Western Front in World War I!

Come along and learn about John Simpson and his famous donkey 'Murphy' who saved so many wounded soldiers at Gallipoli. Among the many exhibits is 'Rolf', a most unpatriotic German messenger dog who delivered his important message to Australian troops on the Western Front in 1918 rather than to his German masters!

School excursions are welcome but group visit bookings are essential.
